Goddes Shilaputri or Shailaputri

The first day of Navratri is dedicated to worshipping Goddess Maa Shilaputri, also known as Shailputri who is described in the scriptures as the daughter of mountains.

Shilaputri is said to be highly effulgent like crores of suns and moons. She rides on a bull (Nandi) and carries a trident and lotus in her hands. She wears a moon on her forehead.

Story of Maa Shilaputri
Goddess Sati entered the sacrificial fire of Daksha and gave up her life. She then took birth as Mother Parvati or the daughter of Himavan or Mountain King. She divinely realized her origin and started meditating deeply to reach Lord Shiva’s abode once again. Her severe penance shook the three worlds. Finally, Lord Brahma appeared in front of her and assured that Lord Shiva would accept her in marriage. Due to the severe penance, her body was reduced to a skeleton and Lord Shiva bathed her with the Ganges flowing from his hair and she regained her splendor.

Favorite Flower – Jasmine

Favorite Color – Yellow
