New Delhi, May 28, 2025 – Acharya Jonas Masetti, a Brazilian Acharya of Vedanta, was conferred the prestigious Padma Shri award by President Droupadi Murmu on May 27, 2025, recognizing his remarkable contributions to spiritualism. The award ceremony, held at Rashtrapati Bhavan, celebrated Masetti’s dedication to disseminating the teachings of Vedanta, Sanskrit, and Vedic culture, particularly in Brazil, where he has emerged as a global ambassador of Indian philosophical traditions.

A Journey Rooted in Anaikatti Under Pujya Sri Swami Dayananda Saraswati

Jonas Masetti, also known as Vishvanatha, began his spiritual journey after a successful career as a mechanical engineer in Brazil, where he graduated from the Military Institute of Engineering (IME) and worked in strategic consulting for the stock market. His life took a transformative turn in 2004 when he began studying Vedanta under an Indian teacher in Brazil.

Masetti’s pursuit of knowledge led him to India, where he enrolled in a rigorous three-year residential course at Arsha Vidya Gurukulam in Anaikatti, near Coimbatore, under the revered Pujya Sri Swami Dayananda Saraswati. A prominent Guru in the Advaita Vedanta tradition, Pujya Sri Swami Dayananda Saraswati was instrumental in shaping Masetti’s understanding of Vedanta. Masetti spent over four and a half years at Anaikatti, immersing himself in the study of Vedanta, the Bhagavad Gita, and Sanskrit. Reflecting on his time there, Masetti once shared, “I felt a deep connection to the culture during my time at the ashram, which inspired me to recite Sanskrit mantras and dive into Indian texts.”

Bringing Vedanta to Brazil: A Modern Approach to Ancient Wisdom

After completing his studies in India, Masetti returned to Brazil with a mission to share the wisdom of Vedanta. He founded the Instituto Vishva Vidya in the hills of Petrópolis, about an hour from Rio de Janeiro, creating a hub for spiritual learning that integrates traditional teachings with modern technology. Through structured courses, online classes, immersive cultural retreats known as Vedanta Camps, and publications, Masetti has reached over 150,000 students, transcending cultural and linguistic barriers.

Masetti’s approach to Vedanta is deeply rooted in the lifestyle he adopted during his time in India. Often seen in a traditional white dhoti with a tilak on his forehead, he embodies the Vedic way of life while making it accessible to a diverse audience. His teachings focus on the practical application of Vedanta, a philosophical system derived from the Upanishads, which explores the nature of reality, self, and liberation. By combining ancient wisdom with contemporary tools like online platforms, Masetti has made Vedanta relevant to modern seekers, particularly in the Americas, where he has been acknowledged as an Ambassador of the Vedic Tradition.

Masetti’s work also includes cultural initiatives, such as presenting the Ramayana in Sanskrit, an effort that highlights the global resonance of Indian heritage. His institute, Vishva Vidya, has become a beacon for those seeking to explore Vedic culture, with programs that include meditation, scriptural study, and retreats designed to foster a deeper understanding of spiritual principles.

Recognition from India: Padma Shri and Modi’s Praise in Mann Ki Baat

The Indian government has lauded Masetti’s contributions to popularizing Vedic culture abroad. On May 27, 2025, President Droupadi Murmu presented him with the Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian honor, in the field of spiritualism. The award citation praised Masetti as a “Vedanta Acharya dedicated to the teaching and dissemination of Vedanta, Sanskrit, and Vedic culture,” noting how his work has expanded the reach of these traditions globally.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also recognized Masetti’s efforts on multiple occasions. In his Mann Ki Baat address on November 29, 2020, Modi highlighted Masetti’s work in Brazil, stating, “Jonas Masetti, who is based in Brazil, popularizes Vedanta as well as Gita among people there.” Modi further commended Masetti during a visit to Brazil in November 2024, where he met the scholar and his team. During the meeting, Masetti’s group presented glimpses of the Ramayan in Sanskrit, prompting Modi to remark on X, “It is commendable how Indian culture is making an impact all over the world.” Modi’s acknowledgment underscores the significance of Masetti’s role in fostering cross-cultural spiritual dialogue.

A Legacy of Spiritual Connection Between India and Brazil

Masetti’s journey reflects a deep commitment to bridging the spiritual legacies of India and Brazil. Inspired by the visits of earlier Vedanta teachers like Swami Chinmayananda, who first brought the tradition to Brazil in the 1970s, Masetti has expressed his vision for Brazil to have a spiritual legacy akin to India’s. His work at Vishva Vidya and his recognition as a Padma Shri recipient mark a significant step toward that goal, showcasing the universal appeal of Vedanta and the enduring relevance of Vedic teachings in a globalized world.

As Masetti continues to inspire thousands through his teachings, his story serves as a testament to the power of cultural exchange and the timeless wisdom of India’s spiritual heritage.
